Sustainable Urban Growth

Georgina Sanchez

I am originally from the gorgeous land of Costa Rica. For the past couple years I had the incredible opportunity to interact, collaborate, and learn with researchers across many fields
while completing my graduate education in the U.S.

I graduates with a Masters in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University. My research focused on improving watershed management by integrating socio-economic and ecological models, which is a more holistic and sustainable approach than conventional methods. My research applied techniques such as Structural Equation Modeling combined with Spatial Clustering, to examine dependence relationships between stream health measures and socioeconomic data.

Currently, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State. I am also very exited to say that I am a researcher at the Center for Geospatial Analytics.

Research

My goal as a Ph.D. student is to better understand coupled natural and human systems and provide decision-support tools that can effectively be used by resource managers and landowners who deal with socio-ecological grand  challenges such as climate change, urbanization and the rapid loss of biodiversity on a daily basis. Specifically, I am interested in investigating the impacts that urban development and climate change could have on natural and human systems in coastal regions. My research seeks to identify sustainable growth strategies to accommodate the growing demand for housing near coastal amenities, while also acknowledging and mitigating the risks associated with climate change and the strongly negative impacts of development on ecosystems and ecosystem services.
