Economic and Market Implications of Sea-Level Rise and Salt Intrusion on the Albemarle Pamlico Peninsula |
The purpose of this study is to develop community-based strategies for adapting to changing environmental and weather conditions in the Coasts of NC. Since shifts in the environment have the potential to affect many different aspects such as society (health and wellness), ecology, economy, hydrology, and community infrastructure and resilience, an understanding of how these factors may be affected is key to adaptation.

Concept |
As a team of researchers we have developed a framework to portray the cyclic and interconnected nature of the factors mentioned above. As a member of this team my responsibility is to understand the dynamics between the social system (community, industry and government) and the biological system (wildlife, vegetation and environmental conditions) and develop strategies that will foster more sustainable economic conditions for the region. To do this, research will be conducted in several stages
|
The Objective |
Is to understand the historical and current economic status of key industries in the area, to determine if and how sea-level rise and salinization is likely to play a role in shifting economic trends. Key stakeholders will be identified and queried to understand their perceptions of the current markets and trends in industries. Strategic solutions that will allow these industries to stay resilient through changing environmental conditions will be identified in collaboration with these key stakeholders.
